European Youth Olympic Festival
Some 2 000 team members from 47 European National Olympic Committees are expected to take part in nine sports disciplines at the Vuokatti EYOF. The sports programme will feature alpine skiing, biathlon, ice hockey, snowboarding, cross country skiing, ski jumping, short track, figure skating and Nordic combined. Thanks to the inclusion of girls’ ice hockey and Nordic combined, Vuokatti will be the most gender-balanced in the event’s history.
The urban area of Vuokatti, in the municipality of Sotkamo, will host alpine skiing, biathlon, cross country skiing, figure skating, short track and snowboarding. The city of Kajaani will host the ice hockey events. Ski jumping and Nordic combined are hosted by the city of Lahti.
EYOF is the only major multisport event created directly for the best young athletes in Europe. After 2001 successful European Youth Olympic Days, Vuokatti gets again a chance to organise EYOF 2022.
Our mission to host the EYOF lies on the EYOF´s vision,” young people are the future”. The main reason for bidding was to socialize youths into sport culture and give them a spark for their own sporty lifestyle through major international event. By building the event together with the youths for the youths, is the best way to obtain new young volunteers, which are trained for the future of sports players and event organizers.
European youth olympic days
European Youth Olympic Days, organized in Vuokatti in 2001, were for a long time the most important sporting event in the region of Kainuu. Even now, after 20 years, that successful event is remembered with special warmth. Although the Kainuu region has been organizing numerous major sport events such as 2013 Orienteering World Championships, the 2001 EYOD event is still the most important event memory for many residents and the source of inspiration for many volunteers.
Since 2001, Kainuu region has held numerous major sporting events and thereby the event expertise within the different organizations has increased significantly.
